Hey Wes, I just ran across your blog from the link you left from Andy Osenga's blog..It's been a long time since you let me borrow your Normals cds in Denton - as well as introducing Mandy and me to John Piper's Desiring God. George, I have not been to any of these shows. What I have always wondered is whether the artists speak English at the shows, and if so whether it's translated or not. I mean, do they just say, "Nobody rocks like Monterrey!!" and the crowd goes wild? Or is there a guy in a tuxedo there who translates, "¡¡Nadie rockea como Monterrey!!" and then the crowd goes wild?
My friend Héctor went to the U2 show, and he told me that Bono had learned a few Spanish phrases and everybody dug that.

Además, Bono cantó un pedazo de "Cielito Lindo" sin música, la pura voz. Esta es la canción que los mexicanos cantamos en los estadios de futbol soccer cuando juega la selección nacional.
Lo que yo pienso como es esto de las bandas es que la mayor parte del tiempo en el concierto hablan en inglés y dicen solamente algunas frases en español y eso es suficiente para la audiencia. Lo demás que dicen en inglés a la gente no le importa solo grita UUUUUHHHH!!!
Tienes razón. Supongo que nadie sufriría por no escuchar lo que tienen que decir un grupo de rock. Normalmente no es nada profundo.

OK, so last night I went to my first show here. It was, of all things, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. Actually, though that might sound random, Mexicans are much more into virtuosity than soul. It was apparently the first time Bela has played in Monterrey, and the Teatro de la Cuidad was sold out. Everyone loved it. I went with three of the guys from the IBUC worship team.
To answer my own question, after awkwardly saying "Buenas noches" (to great applause), they spoke English the rest of the night, which the crowd seemed to understand for the most part (they seemed to react in all the right places). People would shout out things in English that were sometimes intelligible, sometimes not so much. Although the MC announced at the beginning that no recording was allowed, including cell phones, the crowd completely ignored that warning. I would say that at least a third of the audience had either their cell phone cameras or a straight up video camera out most of the time.
David, my bass player, went up and got his picture taken with Victor Wooten after the show.
